Since the discovery of pheromones by Peter Karlson and Adolf Butenandt in 1959, the use of pheromones has become quite common especially on large farms and even in households all over the world. According to reports, the use of synthetic pheromones has become so common that there are now many products that are being sold over the counter which boast of synthetic pheromone content. Products such as sprays that help to calm down anxious dogs, cats and other types of domestic animals are now available in the market for reasonable prices.

Uses of Synthetic Pheromones

Synthetic pheromones have many uses. According to experts, synthetic pheromones mimic the natural pheromones release by insects and animals to communicate with its own species. Synthetic pheromones therefore can send messages such as alarm, food and sex to certain species upon which the specific type of pheromones is directed to. For instance, synthetic pheromones that help your dog calm down mimics the pheromones emitted by other dogs. Thus a puppy that had just been separated from its mother feels more comfortable if it’s new home is sprayed with pheromones that mimic the ones that its mother usually sends out when nursing.

When buying synthetic pheromones, it is very important to pay close attention to the type of pheromones that it will imitate. There are many types of pheromones released by animals and insects during different situations. Since different situations would require different types of pheromones, this means that you cannot use the same type of synthetic pheromones for different types of occasions. For instance, it will not really do you much good if you use alarm pheromones to facilitate breeding.

Is it Safe to Use Synthetic Pheromones?

According to some scientists, there have been no significant findings of negative effects with the use of synthetic pheromones. Laboratory studies have shown that synthetic pheromones blend seamlessly into nature and do not cause disruptions in the natural flow of things. In fact, according to scientists, the use of synthetic materials can enhance the effects of some products thus producing the optimum effect.

However, there are many naturalists and environmentalist that do not share the ideas of the scientists regarding the safety of the use of synthetic products. It has always been the stand of these naturalists that tampering with the flow of nature will eventually disrupt the patterns of the universe and produce adverse effects.
